Italian grapevines

Italian grapevines | Sensory Analisys | Sicily Wine Trail

Wine classification is one of the most complex. There are:

  1. Table wines represent the main Italian production and are divided into:
    • Quite fine;
    • Fine: e.g. Aglianico, Barbera, Chianti, Trebbiano, that aged become better wines.
    • Excellent: e.g. barbaresco, barolo, Cyrus, sassella) produced with specific techniques and aged for a variable number of years.
  2. Blending wines: high alcohol content, intense colour and produced mainly in the southern regions such as Sicily, Calabria and Apulia.
  3. Special or luxury wines, contain high alcohol content, often fragrant and aromatic, liqueur or dried, are used mostly as a dessert wine e.g. Aleatico, Brachetto, Passito of Pantelleria and Malvasia. Special wines are also those flavoured, like Vermouth or Marsala. Finally, a group of special wines is the sparkling wines, usually white and dry as champagne or sweet as Moscato and Prosecco.
